Compact Crimping for Fishing Leaders and Small Wire Rope

The iCrimp CWR1522 ratcheting fishing crimping tool helps form sleeve-secured loops in compatible fishing leader and small wire cable assemblies. Its compact 6.8 in. body, compound-leverage mechanism and integrated cutter make it useful at a rigging bench or in a tackle bag. Choose the tool alone, a sleeve assortment or a complete small-wire-rope kit.

Start with your leader or cable and sleeve specifications—not line breaking strength alone. A successful connection depends on matching the material, diameter, sleeve bore and wall thickness to the correct crimping cavity.

Choose Your Package

Package Included Best starting point
Tool Only CWR1522 crimper with integrated cutter You already have compatible sleeves and leader or cable material.
Tool + 150 Aluminum Sleeves CWR1522 plus 150 double-barrel aluminum sleeves: 50 each in nominal 1.2, 1.5 and 2.0 mm sizes Small wire-rope projects requiring a sleeve assortment; check the sleeve dimensions against your material.
Tool + 328 ft Wire Rope Kit CWR1522, 328 ft (100 m) of 1/16 in. (approximately 1.59 mm) 304 stainless steel 7×7 wire rope, 200 aluminum sleeves and 50 M2 stainless steel thimbles Small cable loops, garden supports and display-wire projects using the supplied cable.

The wire-rope kit is not a universal fishing-leader kit. For nylon monofilament or other fishing leader materials, use sleeves specifically approved for that material and diameter. Included aluminum sleeves should not be assumed suitable for every line.

Why Choose the CWR1522?

  • Compound leverage: helps reduce the hand effort needed to compress compatible sleeves during repeated rig preparation.
  • Ratcheting action: supports a controlled closing cycle. It does not automatically determine the correct sleeve, crimp pressure or finished connection strength.
  • Four crimping cavities: provide options for small cable-and-sleeve combinations within the tool's stated range.
  • Integrated wire cutter: trims compatible small wire cable without changing tools.
  • Compact construction: approximately 6.8 in. long, with chrome-molybdenum steel construction for routine hand-swaging work.

Tool Specifications

Model CWR1522
Tool length Approximately 6.8 in. (173 mm)
Mechanism Manual ratchet with compound leverage
Published wire diameter range 0.1–2.2 mm (approximately 0.004–0.087 in.)
Published cavity ranges 0.1–0.5 mm; 0.5–1.0 mm; 1.0–2.0 mm; 2.2 mm
Sleeve style Compatible aluminum oval and double-barrel sleeves
Wire cutting capacity Up to 2.2 mm (approximately 0.087 in.), subject to wire material and hardness

Cavity ranges are not universal sleeve outside dimensions. Two sleeves labeled for the same cable diameter may have different wall thicknesses and require different tooling. Check the sleeve supplier's crimping instructions before use.

Applications: Fishing and Beyond

  • Fishing leader preparation: make sleeve-secured loops for compatible wire leaders and heavy nylon leaders, including connections to swivels, snaps and lure rigs. Useful for preparing multiple rigs before a trip or at a tackle-shop workbench.
  • Small wire-rope loops: assemble compatible cable-and-sleeve connections for general, non-safety-critical projects.
  • Garden and plant supports: prepare small cable assemblies for trellises and plant-training projects where the complete assembly is appropriately specified.
  • Picture and display wires: form small cable loops for suitable display assemblies, checking the rated capacity of every component.
  • Hobby and workshop projects: make light-duty retention loops and custom cable assemblies within the material and size limits.

This is a sleeve crimper for small cable. It is not a swaging tool for stainless steel threaded railing studs or structural railing fittings. No lifting, fall-protection or structural load rating is established by the tool's diameter range.

How to Select the Right Sleeve and Make a Better Crimp

  1. Identify the material and measure its actual diameter. Fishing line rated in lb or kg can vary in diameter between brands and constructions.
  2. Match the sleeve to the material. Confirm bore size, sleeve material, wall thickness and whether the connection uses an oval or double-barrel sleeve. For a loop, the sleeve must accommodate both passes as intended by its manufacturer.
  3. Select the appropriate cavity and sleeve position. Follow the sleeve supplier's directions for the number and position of compressions. Instructions for another brand's tool or sleeve are not automatically interchangeable.
  4. Complete the ratchet cycle without forcing an incompatible sleeve. Excessive compression can damage the leader; insufficient compression can allow slipping.
  5. Inspect and test a sample assembly before repeated production. Check for cracks, sharp edges, damaged line and movement through the sleeve. Use the component supplier's prescribed verification method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose a cavity from the fishing line's pound-test rating?

No. Use actual line diameter and the sleeve specification. Pound-test describes line strength, not the dimensions of the sleeve or the correct crimping cavity.

Can it crimp monofilament and fluorocarbon?

Compatible heavy nylon leader applications are described for this tool family. Fluorocarbon compatibility must be established for the specific line, sleeve and crimping setup; do not assume that a wire-rope sleeve is suitable. Test the finished connection using the component supplier's guidance.

Does a crimp retain 100% of the line's strength?

No universal strength percentage is claimed. Finished strength depends on the leader, sleeve, tooling and technique. A cutter or crimping capacity is not a working-load rating.

Can I use it to cut fishing hooks or hardened wire?

The integrated cutter is intended for compatible small wire cable. Do not treat the diameter limit as approval for hooks, hardened wire or every alloy.

How should I care for it after fishing?

Remove salt and debris, dry the tool thoroughly and maintain the pivot and ratchet with an appropriate light lubricant. Keep lubricant away from leader and sleeve contact surfaces. Store the tool dry.

Which option should I buy for fishing?

Choose Tool Only when you already use a proven leader-and-sleeve combination. Choose a kit when its supplied materials match your project; check dimensions before assuming the included sleeves fit your fishing line.

Before ordering

  • Check rope diameter and construction against the specified sleeve material and tool cavity.
  • Follow the sleeve supplier's compression sequence and inspection requirements.
Does a completed swage establish a load rating?

No. The tool's size range does not establish the working load of an assembled cable. Obtain the required assembly specifications for load-bearing uses.

What should I send for a fit check?

Send the product model, cable or pipe size, connector or fitting part number, and clear photos. Include the intended application so our team can help you identify the appropriate setup.
